Are you at a crossroads and need to make an important decision that will most likely change the course of your entire life?

TYPICALLY, PEOPLE DON’T MAKE THOSE KINDS OF DECISIONS LIGHTLY, so to make it easier for you, this week we’ll look at 5 questions to ask yourself to gain clarity and make decisions faster.

For those of you new to my blog, my name is Andreja and I’m a professional Executive Performance coach and on this page we talk about all things business, growth and performance, so hit that subscribe button to get notified when we post new content.

Now, here are 5 questions to ask yourself to gain clarity fast:

1. First create some space and take a step back

We can’t see the picture clearly when we are in the frame, so remove youtself from the frame. Especially when feeling pressed with needing to make an important decision as soon as possible, try to gain a bit more time to sleep it over and ask yourself, WHAT’S THE ULTIMATE OUTCOME THAT I’M AFTER?

2. Clarify what really matters to you

  • What do you really want?
  • Is what you are doing taking you there?

Sometimes we’re too busy chasing after certain labels that mean something in our society and culture, without thinking twice if those labels are really what will fulfil us in the end.

3. Decide what are you willing to compromise on and what not.

So many times you see very successful people achieve everything possible and more only to come to the top and say: IS THIS IT? IS THIS ALL THERE IS?

THINK ABOUT IT: Is success without fulfillment, or people to share it with still classified as success?

4. Give yourself more options than just two

In the words of Tony Robbins:

  • 1 option is really No option,
  • 2 options create a Dilemma,
  • 3 options or more start creating real options, SO ASK YOURSELF:

WHAT ARE ALL THE WAYS IN WHICH I COULD GET TO MY END GOAL?

And question

5. WHAT IS THE SMALLEST ACTION I CAN TAKE IMMEDIATELY?

Or if still unsure about which way to go, WHO CAN YOU CALL OR ASK FOR ADVICE?

Stop overthinking it and rather MOVE, DECIDE or DO SOMETHING.

THE TRAPS OF GOOD DECISION MAKING, coming from Chip and Dan Heath and their book DECISIVE, are:

  1. Narrow framing: We don’t give ourselves enough choices/options.

2. Confirmation bias: We seek out “yes people” who validate our thinking, even if our thinking is flawed or not good for us.

3. Short-term emotion: We allow our emotions to rule our decisions.

4. Over-confidence: We think we know more about the future than we really do.

Make sure you avoid these traps and be as strategic as possible when making your decisions.

Now it’s your time to share: WHAT ARE YOUR TOP RULES WHEN MAKING POWERFUL DECISIONS?
